Choosing Quality Child Care
Choosing a day care program for you child can be a challenge.
When selecting a program, visit at a time of day when the children should be
active, such as in the morning. Take your child along and don't hesitate
to ask questions.
Things to look for:

Staff who treat children with respect, flexibility and
patience. Make sure that there are a sufficient number of staff to
meet the needs of the children.

Safe indoor and outdoor areas and equipment. Airy
rooms with bright colors.

Non-toxic play materials

First aid kit
-
Healthy snacks and meals
-
Hand washing after toileting and before meals and snacks
-
Separate cribs for infants and separate cots or mats for
others

Proper staff to child ratios
-
Plenty of educational and play materials
-
Organized programs of activities
-
Supervised rest time
-
A license or registration certificate from the Pennsylvania
Department of Public Welfare or Education

Rules clearly explained
-
Good behavior encouraged.

What happens if my child gets sick or injured at the center?

Are the caregivers trained in child development?

Try to set up a trial day when your child can join in activities
while you observe
Ask yourself:

Is the center conveniently located?

Is the center affordable?

Do I feel comfortable with the caregivers?

1-800-222-2117. Day care licensing staff there will answer questions,
investigate complaints and provide further information on day care regulations
or on specific day care facilities. Copies of day care regulations may
also be obtained by calling the Department of Public Welfare.
